KAG
began in 1969 as the Kentucky Gerontology Society, Inc. It was led
by Dr. Earl Kaufman, Director of the University of Kentucky Council
on Aging. The organization became active in the late 1970s.
KAG
was reactivated under the leadership of Dr. Linda Kuder from the
University of Kentucky Sanders Brown Center on Aging and Dr. Lois
Layne from Western Kentucky University. In October of 1987, the
Kentucky Association for Gerontology, Inc. was incorporated as a
501 (c) (3) non-stock, non-profit corporation. L.C. Wolfe, from
the University of Kentucky College of Social Work designed the KAG
logo in the colors of gray and maroon. In spring 2004 a new logo
was designed with the letters KAG encircled in blue and the words
Kentucky Association for Gerontology on a flag to the right of the
circle.
KAG
is led by a Board of Directors who reflects the six KAG geographical
regions and the multiple disciplines of the KAG membership. An awards
program was initiated in 1993 to recognize outstanding achievement
in the field of aging. Awards are given to recognize distinguished
achievement for practitioners, educators, and students as well as
a Thoroughbred Award to recognize extraordinary efforts by a person
age 60 or older on behalf of older Kentuckians.
KAG
hosts an annual conference that circulates each of the six regions.
The training conferences are planned and managed by KAG Board members
and KAG members and other community leaders. It offers an opportunity
for professionals, advocates, and older adults to network and learn
about new and innovative programs, services, activities, research
and more. Also, the annual KAG Awards are presented at this conference.
In June
of 2003 Officers and Board members of KAG met for a weekend retreat
in order to rethink our goals and to make a formal mission statement
for KAG. As a result of this process the following statement was
created: KAG's mission is to advocate, educate, and network with
vision for and with older adults and those who impact their lives.
